14 POINTS OF FASCISM

Why does this all seem eerily familiar?

14 POINTS OF FASCISM

The 14 Points were written in 2004 by Dr. Laurence Britt, a political scientist. Dr. Britt studied the fascist regimes of: Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile).

1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism

From the prominent displays of flags and bunting to the ubiquitous lapel pins, the fervor to show patriotic nationalism, both on the part of the regime itself and of citizens caught up in its frenzy, was always obvious. Catchy slogans, pride in the military, and demands for unity were common themes in expressing this nationalism. It was usually coupled with a suspicion of things foreign that often bordered on xenophobia.

2. Disdain for the importance of human rights

The regimes themselves viewed human rights as of little value and a hindrance to realizing the objectives of the ruling elite. Through clever use of propaganda, the population was brought to accept these human rights abuses by marginalizing, even demonizing, those being targeted. When abuse was egregious, the tactic was to use secrecy, denial, and disinformation.

3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause

The most significant common thread among these regimes was the use of scapegoating as a means to divert the people’s attention from other problems, to shift blame for failures, and to channel frustration in controlled directions. The methods of choice—relentless propaganda and disinformation—were usually effective. Often the regimes would incite “spontaneous” acts against the target scapegoats, usually communists, socialists, liberals, Jews, ethnic and racial minorities, traditional national enemies, members of other religions, secularists, homosexuals, and “terrorists.” Active opponents of these regimes were inevitably labeled as terrorists and dealt with accordingly.

4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism

Ruling elites always identified closely with the military and the industrial infrastructure that supported it. A disproportionate share of national resources was allocated to the military, even when domestic needs were acute. The military was seen as an expression of nationalism, and was used whenever possible to assert national goals, intimidate other nations, and increase the power and prestige of the ruling elite.

5. Rampant sexism

Beyond the simple fact that the political elite and the national culture were male-dominated, these regimes inevitably viewed women as second-class citizens. They were adamantly anti-abortion and also homophobic. These attitudes were usually codified in Draconian laws that enjoyed strong support by the orthodox religion of the country, thus lending the regime cover for its abuses.

6. A controlled mass media

Under some of the regimes, the mass media were under strict direct control and could be relied upon never to stray from the party line. Other regimes exercised more subtle power to ensure media orthodoxy. Methods included the control of licensing and access to resources, economic pressure, appeals to patriotism, and implied threats. The leaders of the mass media were often politically compatible with the power elite. The result was usually success in keeping the general public unaware of the regimes’ excesses.

7. Obsession with national security

Inevitably, a national security apparatus was under direct control of the ruling elite. It was usually an instrument of oppression, operating in secret and beyond any constraints. Its actions were justified under the rubric of protecting “national security,” and questioning its activities was portrayed as unpatriotic or even treasonous.

8. Religion and ruling elite tied together

Unlike communist regimes, the fascist and protofascist regimes were never proclaimed as godless by their opponents. In fact, most of the regimes attached themselves to the predominant religion of the country and chose to portray themselves as militant defenders of that religion. The fact that the ruling elite’s behavior was incompatible with the precepts of the religion was generally swept under the rug. Propaganda kept up the illusion that the ruling elites were defenders of the faith and opponents of the “godless.” A perception was manufactured that opposing the power elite was tantamount to an attack on religion.

9. Power of corporations protected

Although the personal life of ordinary citizens was under strict control, the ability of large corporations to operate in relative freedom was not compromised. The ruling elite saw the corporate structure as a way to not only ensure military production (in developed states), but also as an additional means of social control. Members of the economic elite were often pampered by the political elite to ensure a continued mutuality of interests, especially in the repression of “have-not” citizens.

10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated

Since organized labor was seen as the one power center that could challenge the political hegemony of the ruling elite and its corporate allies, it was inevitably crushed or made powerless. The poor formed an underclass, viewed with suspicion or outright contempt. Under some regimes, being poor was considered akin to a vice.

11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts

Intellectuals and the inherent freedom of ideas and expression associated with them were anathema to these regimes. Intellectual and academic freedom were considered subversive to national security and the patriotic ideal. Universities were tightly controlled; politically unreliable faculty harassed or eliminated. Unorthodox ideas or expressions of dissent were strongly attacked, silenced, or crushed. To these regimes, art and literature should serve the national interest or they had no right to exist.

12. Obsession with crime and punishment

Most of these regimes maintained Draconian systems of criminal justice with huge prison populations. The police were often glorified and had almost unchecked power, leading to rampant abuse. “Normal” and political crime were often merged into trumped-up criminal charges and sometimes used against political opponents of the regime. Fear, and hatred, of criminals or “traitors” was often promoted among the population as an excuse for more police power.

13. Rampant cronyism and corruption

Those in business circles and close to the power elite often used their position to enrich themselves. This corruption worked both ways; the power elite would receive financial gifts and property from the economic elite, who in turn would gain the benefit of government favoritism. Members of the power elite were in a position to obtain vast wealth from other sources as well: for example, by stealing national resources. With the national security apparatus under control and the media muzzled, this corruption was largely unconstrained and not well understood by the general population.

14. Fraudulent elections

Elections in the form of plebiscites or public opinion polls were usually bogus. When actual elections with candidates were held, they would usually be perverted by the power elite to get the desired result. Common methods included maintaining control of the election machinery, intimidating and disenfranchising opposition voters, destroying or disallowing legal votes, and, as a last resort, turning to a judiciary beholden to the power elite.

Disturbing Bus Ride

On a recent layover, I was on the Minneapolis city bus.

I'm sitting in row 7 and a large 20 something black guy is sitting on all of the handicapped seats in the front of the bus.

An Arab woman got on the bus wearing western clothing and rearranging her head thing to cover up her head and face. She also had a backpack.

The black guy looks at her after the bus starts moving and says, "what are you getting ready to do with that?" He points at the backpack. "Blow up the F@#ing bus?"

Ooooh I think....this is not good. Get ready to flee. With flee or fight...I choose flee. I would call 911 of course as I was fleeing. I had my cellphone locked and loaded.

The lady does not say one word. She just keeps trying to get this thing over her face....which she is having some difficulty with.

The black guy now is getting agitated because she will not react or respond to him.

He says, "yeah bitch...cover that shit up....nobody wants to look at what you got".

And he goes on and on and on.

But she doesn't say a word. No expression and not a sound.

So that really makes the guy mad so he goes up to the bus driver and says....while the bus is moving...."let me off of this f@#ing bus".

The bus driver tells him to sit the F down.

At the next stop, almost everybody gets off...including me, the nut and the lady.

I made sure that he went one way and she went the other.

What a disturbing thing to see. We all couldn't believe it.

He had a big coat on, so confronting him without knowing what was under that coat wasn't an option unless you also had a large loaded gun.

He didn't seem mentally ill.

Just full of hate.

Which I don't really understand from a minority person.

He, of all people, should be somewhat sensitive to behavior like that.

I don't think he would appreciate someone else coming up to him, using the N word and saying other derogatory things.

Very strange.

See how much fun layovers are when you ride the bus?

A Lot of Foam

Flying back to Atlanta the other night, this older female Flight Attendant tells the first officer and I this story.

She is working the MD-88......a horrible, smelly, cramped tubed that seats 142 people.

Before take-off, she is sitting in the jump seat that is in the middle of the cabin. A jump seat, if you don't know, is that bench thing that the flight attendants sit on for take off and landing and also when they want to do their knitting instead of serving you.

The middle jump seat on the mad dog (MD-88...now you really know some airline lingo)...is in the aft portion of the cabin next to the galley...not the very aft but about 2/3 of the way. And this is a unique jump seat because you are sitting right next to a passenger for takeoff and landing.

So....the passenger that she is sitting next to is a nervous flier. She is really freaked out.

Just before takeoff the flight attendant takes a airborne cold pill...to ward off any nasty diseases you passengers might be infecting her with.

Unfortunately....she has put an Alka-Seltzer in her mouth.

And her mouth starts to foam like she has full blown rabies.
Oh how is wish I had seen that.

The nervous passenger...who already knows that in just moments she will die a horrible death from the metal death tube that she is on ......looks over at the crazy woman sitting next to her foaming at the mouth and freaks out. She knows that the world is ending at that moment.

The flight attendant said that she couldn't get the foaming to stop and since they were on take-off she couldn't get up and do something about it. She said she sort of smiled through the foam and gave the OK signal.

Fun fun fun. I miss all the good stuff behind my bullet proof door.

Alaska

I once again want to recommened this excellent website that I found.

Great website and more excellent nature photography.

www.acriticaldecision.org

The link is on the right side of my blog.

FCTYLNBMUJAILGOOD

That stands for "For Christmas this year, let's not buy more unneccesary junk and instead let's get out of debt".

The news reports are ominous. Because of higher gas prices etc we Americans might not increase or heaven forbid buy as much junk for Christmas as we did last year.

They interviewed people that had actually maxed out their credit cards and were unable to get any more credit. Shocking.

I wasn't alive then but my 96 year old grandfather was....when you were excited to get an orange for Christmas. Or at least that what he said. That could have been one of those I walked 17 miles through land mines to get to school everyday. But one thing is for sure....consumerism in 1915 if it existed at all was much different.

Looking around at most homes, I can't really imagine what in the world there is to buy for Christmas. People have just about everything. There are poor people of course but they don't have any money to spend anyway. They get the pleasure of riding a nasty city bus everyday...so be thankful you have a car and gas to put in it...at least for now.

With everything going on in the world...I just don't see the top news story as.....Americans are spending less.....good, I'm glad we are. It's about time we got our act together. Now if only our country would.

You know what else....... while I'm on a roll and Elton John is on in the background.......

I heard someone bashing Hillary the other day. Now I'm not for or against Hillary. I haven't made up my mind. But they said that Hillary doesn't even have a plan to fix social security. You know what? There are 535 people in Congress who could get off of their lazy butts and fix social security. Fixing SS is not hard. It just isn't fun. And that's the problem. No one in this country is willing to sacrifice (except for the 4,000 already dead from this ridiculous war and the thousands wounded and maimed). Going on a diet hurts and it sucks. Eating pizza, ice cream and watching Oprah everyday is much more fun than eating tuna fish and working out an hour each day. Just like social security and our country. To fix it is hard and painful. But most things worth doing are....aren't they?

Pat Robertson Endorses Giuliani

Oh my goodness.

Isn't it odd that Pat Robertson, the head of the Christian Coalition, is supporting someone who has moral beliefs that are opposite of his own.

I mean let's get real people.

Rudy is pro choice for abortion and he is for gay rights.

Rudy should be the Anti-Christ as far as Robertson is concerned.

This next paragraph I stole from an article on the web. I never was good at "putting things in my own words". Dr. Margaret Broadnax, my freshman english teacher didn't think so either. That old witch. Easy. Deep breaths. OK, back to the story.

Further, Robertson's Christian Coalition organization endorsed Giuliani's opponent in his 1993 campaign for mayor of New York City. They cited issues such as abortion and gay rights as reasons not to support the Republican.

Either you believe in something or you don't. Have some backbone.

Robertson said, in a very nice way, that even though Rudy was a dirt bag when it came to social issues, because he wants to kill as many Aaayrabs as possible, then dog gonnit that's good enough fer me.

I am truly dumbfounded.

I guess I was stupid enough to believe that Robertson actually had core beliefs that he was unwilling to compromise on.

I guess I was wrong.

My Flag

This year, after 25 years of service, I retired from the US Air Force Reserve.

On the retirement application, there are several options of grandeur that you can choose from.

One is a ceremony...that I think consists of a parade. I like parades but only if there are red fire trucks in them and I don't have to get dressed up. The USAF offers none of these parade options.

The next thing you can request is a flag. This flag will be flown over the US Capitol in honor of my 25 years of service and retirement.

Now that sounds very cool to me.

It took 5 months for me to receive my flag. I called headquarters at the 2 month point and said, Hey! Where's my flag? They said that getting the flag takes time because a Senator has to request it and it's a very complicated and solemn event. As it should be for someone of my high status. Well not that high but at least 25 years is a long time.

The day of my flag arrival came out of the blue. I just happened to be home and the postman rang the door bell, put the box down and ran away. I'm sure he didn't know what was in the box or he would have handled it much more carefully. It was my retirement flag...which very recently had been flown over the US Capitol in my honor.

I was very excited. Until I did some investigation.

The flag comes from the Architect of the Capitol. Below, from their website is the Architect's duties.

The Architect of the Capitol is responsible to the United States Congress for the maintenance, operation, development, and preservation of the United States Capitol Complex, which includes the Capitol, the congressional office buildings, the Library of Congress buildings, the Supreme Court building, the U.S. Botanic Garden, the Capitol Power Plant, and other facilities.

I also went on the website of Senator Allred, Colorado Republican. He's the one who requested my flag. And on that website I found how anyone can order a flag to be flown over the Capitol. And for any reason.

Here is the verbiage from Senator Larry Craig's website.

Flying your flag over the US Capitol Building
At my request, the Architect of the Capitol will fly an American flag over the Senate side of the United States Capitol Building. In addition to the price of the flag, there is an additional fee of $4.05 to fly and certify each flag.

I am always pleased to assist Idahoans in obtaining such a flag because each is truly very special. Once flown over the U.S. Capitol Building, each high-quality, American flag is shipped in a sturdy and attractive box along with a certificate of authenticity signed by the Architect of the Capitol.

Each certificate indicates that the flag was flown over the Capitol and may be personalized at your request. Capitol Flags make perfect gifts to mark special achievements, such as Eagle Scout Courts of Honor and graduations; or to celebrate important events and milestones, like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and retirements.

So anybody can get a flag flown over the Capitol.

I went on the Architect of the Capitol's website and here's what I found about where they fly the flags.

The United States Capitol Flag Program
The Capitol Flag Program began in 1937 when a Member of Congress requested a flag that had flown over the Capitol. Over the years the focus of the program gradually expanded to encompass the commemoration of national holidays and various special events, as well as to honor the work of groups such as schools and civic organizations. Requests for Capitol flags rapidly outgrew the supply; hence, the Architect of the Capitol instituted a program of flying smaller flags that may be purchased through Members' offices.

The Architect of the Capitol fulfills all flag requests from Members of the United States Senate, and the House of Representatives. Flags are flown daily year-round, weather permitting, excluding Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There are special flag poles where all flags are flown. After it is flown over the Capitol, each flag is issued a keepsake Certificate of Authenticity by the Architect of the Capitol.

Currently, the Architect of the Capitol fulfills on average more than 100,000 flag requests from Members of Congress annually, with the number of requests and the popularity of the Capitol Flag Program growing steadily each year.

Note the part about There are special flag poles where all flags are flown.

This means next to the overflow parking lot and just east of the recycling dumpster. Your flag will be flown for exactly 3 nano-seconds when it will be pulled down to make room for another 85th birthday celebration.

I wish I hadn't found all of this out. The only reason I did was that I was going to send the Senator a thank you email for my flag and that's when I started digging.

So, the only thing that distinguishes my flag that commemorates 25 years of service to my country and that of the guy who just bowled a 300 game....is that my flag was free. Yipeeee.

My friend Bill put it perfectly. I was lamenting my disappointment with my flag and he said it's like the scene in A Christmas Story. Ralphie waits and waits and waits to get his secret decoder ring in the mail. When he finally gets it the excitement is unbearable. He frantically decodes the message with his new ring and it says...."drink more Ovaltine". What? That's what I felt like when I found out the truth about my flag.
